Elevator that parents player to itself causes jittery motion.

I have an elevator that moves using transform.Translate(). It had a problem where when going down, the player would fall towards the elevator, stop and then the elevator would outrun the player again and so the cycle continued all the way down. In order to solve this I've made it so that the player gets parented to the elevator when you enter it's surface. Now the problem is gone, but there's a new one - the movement is jittery. How can I solve this? The player is a CharacterController btw.
